DaPonte String Quartet

The John David Ellis Memorial Concert, presented by the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation

The newly formed Ellis-Beauregard Foundation will host a concert to celebrate the life and art of its founder, John David Ellis. The Daponte String Quartet will play works by Bach, Mozart, and Shostakovich, with a reception to follow directly after the concert. Music and art lovers of all stripes are invited to join in the festivities. Admission is free.

Mr. Ellis, known to his friends as David, was an abstract artist who began his career in New York City and eventually moved to Maine to complete his life’s work in the mid-coast region.  He and his wife, Joan Beauregard, also an artist, created the AnonimoFoundation in 1990 to support the arts and art education by providing grants to local schools and other nonprofit organizations.  The Heartwood Theater, Seacoast Orchestra, Salt Bay Chamber Fest, RSU #13, and the Rockland Library are just a few of the organizations that have benefited from the Anonimo Foundation’s support.

The Daponte String Quartet, which has established itself over the last twenty years as a leading voice in classical music by virtue of its superb musicianship and intensity of expression, was one of the earliest beneficiaries of the foundation.

“The support of friends like David and Joan was instrumental to our early success,” says DaPonte violinist  Ferdinand Liva. “They were some of the first, most loyal and most generous of our supporters.” Because Ellis “admired Mozart and was also drawn to more contemporary, unusual works,” Liva selected a program for the June concert consisting of The Art of the Fugue by J.S. Bach, Mozart’s Quartet in B Flat Major, and Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8, Op 110.

The Ellis-Beauregard Foundation was established last year, a few months before David’s death.  Still a work in process, the Foundation's mission is to support the arts and local artists. The foundations created by John David Ellis and Joan Beauregard continue to provide important support, not just for the Daponte String Quartet, but for music and visual art throughout the mid-coast region.
