HEATHER MASSE

with Mike & Ruthy

New York-based singer song-maker Heather Masse is a member of the acclaimed Juno-award winning Canadian band The Wailin' Jennys, and has performed at 100's of venues across Europe, Canada, and the states. She has appeared regularly on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, both as a solo performer and as a member of The Jennys, sharing the stage with Wynton Marsalis, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Arlo Guthrie and Tom Rush. She has performed with the bluegrass band The Wayfaring Strangers on NPR's World Cafe, and at Boston's Symphony Hall with the Boston Pops Orchestra.

Heather Masse grew up in rural Maine and began singing at an early age. Having taken a degree in Jazz Voice from the New England Conservatory of Music, she is steeped in the jazz tradition, which informs her distinct approach to singing folk, pop and bluegrass. Heather’s rich, soulful, voice elegantly moves through numerous styles organically and with sincerity -- a quality learned from some of her early influences: Ray Charles, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, and Chet Baker.

She released “Many Moons,” an E.P. of jazz-inspired folk duets with pianist Jed Wilson, and "Tell Me Tonight" with the Brooklyn-based collaboration Heather & the Barbarians. The Wailin Jenny’s latest recording, "Bright Morning Stars" released February 2011, won a Canadian Juno and  features original songs from all 3 members of the band.

Heather's newest release on Red House Records, "Lock My Heart"  is an album of jazz standards and originals with the legendary pianist, Dick Hyman. Her voice is perfectly natural and fresh—lush and supple. She is neither married to the melody nor has the compulsion to show off vocal fireworks. Heather is relaxed as opium and honey, yet is as exacting as a mathematical equation. Her treatment of Kurt Weill's "September Song" and "Lost In The Stars" reveal her soft touch for difficult material.

What a voice!  Every once in a while I happen on a voice so pure, with such great texture, intonation, time and phrasingthat it stops me in my tracks. Heather Masse has all that and more.  - John Ziegler, KUMD

Masse's honeyed voice...gorgeous. - Tallahassee Democrat

Heather Masse has a stunningly beautiful voice and impeccable musicianship. You don't want to miss a chance to hear this singer. - Jazz singer Dominique Eade

MIKE + RUTHY

After thousands of concerts across tens-of-thousands of miles, Ruth Ungar & Mike Merenda have emerged as one of acoustic America’s most revered musical duos. As story-tellers, as singers, as poets and as parents (they tour with their two small children), Mike + Ruthy are heralds of an American cultural awakening that values honesty and togetherness, prefers grit to glitz, and revels in the old-fashioned telling of a story. Described as “rich, vintage Americana” by Time Out NY, Mike + Ruthy’s 2012 Woody Guthrie collaboration “My New York City” is being hailed as one of the most gorgeous pieces ever to have come out of the archive.

Mike + Ruthy can hold an intimate audience in the palm of their hands, and then when it's festival season it's time to crank it up a notch and expand the band.  An Americana mix of bass, drums and pedal steel add swirl and stomp, making their set even more powerful, and fun for the big stage.

A beautiful, live, duo record and a fresh, full-band, studio album are currently in the works for release in 2014 and 2015 respectively.  They also have some solo work developing as Ruthyuke and Ruthless Mike.  Stay tuned.

Mike + Ruthy are carrying the torch for simple, heartfelt acoustic music with a direct line back to the Carter Family via Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and even the Byrds.  - Maverick Magazine, UK

There's perhaps no better way to summarize the lasting impact of Woody Guthrie's music than to note the quality of the very newest music being made with his words.  Husband-wife Mike + Ruthy Merenda got the lyrics to "My New York City" from the Guthrie archives and set it to one of the most gorgeous melodies ever to accompany one of Woody's songs.  It came out in April 2012: Brand new right now, it's destined to become a classic. -eMusic’s 20 Best Woody Guthrie Songs (Sung By Other People)
