12:30pm: MY FAVORITE YEAR

It's 1950's New York and the age of live television. Benjy Stone is a young writer on a major comedy-variety show. He is assigned to chaperon that week's guest Alan Swann, a faded movie-star and renowned womanizer and drinker. Benjy's job is to try and keep Swann sober and above all else, make sure he shows up for the live broadcast on Saturday evening. Benjy and Swann have a number of adventures throughout the week, including dinner with Benjy's somewhat eccentric family. In the end, both learn lessons in life from the other.

Directed by Richard Benjamin

Starring Peter O'Toole, Mark Linn-Baker and Jessica Harper

PG | USA | 1982 | 92 min

2:30pm: THE HORSE'S MOUTH

Alec Guinness wrote the screenplay from the 1944 novel The Horse's Mouth by Joyce Cary, and also played the lead role. In the film, Guinness transforms himself into one of cinema’s most indelible comic figures: the lovably scruffy painter Gulley Jimson. As the ill-behaved Jimson searches for a perfect canvas, he determines to let nothing come between himself and the realization of his exalted vision. A perceptive examination of the struggle of artistic creation, The Horse’s Mouth is also Neame’s comic masterpiece.

Directed by Ronald Neame

Starring Alec Guinness, Kay Walsh and Renee Houston

NR | 1958 | UK | 97 min
