Understanding Opera: A free presentation by Dr. Mariana Mihai-Zoeter

Opera is the fastest growing of all the performing arts, attracting audiences of all ages who are enthralled by the gorgeous music, vivid drama, and magnificent production values!

But what exactly is opera? Come join us as our guest artist Dr. Mariana Mihai-Zoeter introduces you to this mesmerizing form of art. (This is a live class, not a broadcast!) The 2-hour presentation will include a brief history of opera; an overview of composers, singers and plots; how to listen to and understand opera, including the best operas to start with; and comments on why opera is still relevant today. Discover how the beautiful, immersive world of opera can be a welcome respite from today's crazy and chaotic world!

This presentation is open to all -- whether you are new to opera, or have been around for a while!

Mariana Mihai-Zoeter

Dr. Mihai-Zoeter is the Head of Voice Program for the School of Music at the University of Southern Maine, and the artistic director for USM’s summer Opera Workshop Academy. She joined the School of Music faculty after a thirty-year international career as a performer, voice teacher, clinician, conductor, and opera director. Dr. Mihai-Zoeter graduated from the Bucharest University of Music, Romania with a BM in Vocal Performance and Vocal Pedagogy, and received her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Vocal Performance from Shenandoah Conservatory.

The Romanian-American soprano has been described as having "an inborn instinct for emotional coloring, a sense of coming from inside the poetry and the music rather than approaching it from outside." Mariana's musical journeys have taken her to Europe and South America, as well as North America. Highlights of her singing career have been performing with the “George Enescu" Philharmonic at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest, Opera Constanta, The National Opereta Theater “Ion Dacian”, Bucharest, Romania, OSESP The Symphonic Orchestra of the State of Sao Paulo at the Sala Sao Paulo, the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus, the Teatro da Paz in Belem, the Teatro “Jose de Alencar” in Fortaleza, Brazil, the PostClassical Ensemble at the Family Theater at Kennedy Center in Washington DC and many more.

Mariana performed her first recital with arias and lieder at the age of seventeen and at the age of eighteen was contracted as full time lyric artist by the Opera and Operetta Theater “N. Leonard” in Galati, Romania with whom she performed over 300 performances.

A dedicated and beloved teacher, described by her students as being passionate, supportive, creative, inspired, dedicated, giving, determined, knowledgeable, an outstanding leader, and professional, Dr. Mihai-Zoeter won the 2016 Outstanding Faculty Award at the 2015-16 Leadership Awards Reception at the Frostburg State University, MD.  Her students have won numerous competitions, and developed careers as opera singers and music educators.

In July 2012 Mariana Mihai-Zoeter was awarded the medal and diploma of excellence from the city of Braila, Romania for her artistic and pedagogic contributions to the art of singing.

Mariana is also a certified voice teacher of the Institute for Contemporary Commercial Music, Vocal Pedagogy Somatic Voicework™, The LoVetri Method (Musical Theater, Pop, Rock), and she received a certification in A Practical Approach to Directing at Yale University, School of Drama.
