TREKKERS Celebrates 20 Years of Building Up Our Youth!

Featuring travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux, and a Wooden Buoy Auction

Trekkers, a local youth mentoring organization, will celebrate 20 years of Building Up Our Youth, with an event on Wednesday evening, July 16. The celebration will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a pre-event reception at the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland. Reception attendees will have the opportunity to meet and greet travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux, who will be the featured speaker for the event at the Strand Theatre from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

On display at the Maine Lighthouse Museum will be 50 unique wooden lobster pot buoys that have been specially created for Trekkers by 50 artists with ties to Maine. The one-of-a-kind pieces of art will be auctioned off this summer with proceeds to benefit Trekkers programs. Ten of the buoys will be featured in a live auction by Kaja Veilleux from Thomaston Place Auction Galleries, following Paul Theroux’s talk at the Strand.

Paul Theroux is most widely recognized for his witty and thought-provoking writing about issues abroad, oftentimes in less traveled destinations such as western Africa and Asia. In designing the 20th anniversary celebration, Trekkers wanted to highlight the use of expeditionary learning and travel-based education in building up our students’ skills, confidence and life experience. Mr. Theroux’s enthusiasm for travel and cultural exploration will emphasize these themes. As part of this celebratory evening, Trekkers students will also have an opportunity to share their travel and experiential learning experiences. The event will conclude with a question and answer session and a book signing by Mr. Theroux.

Tickets for the public event with general seating are $20 each. Tickets for the pre-event reception with Paul Theroux, including light hors d’oeuvres, beverages and preferred seating at the Strand Theatre, are $45. Tickets will be available at the Trekkers office, hello hello books and the Reading Corner in Rockland and The Owl & Turtle in Camden. All proceeds benefit Trekkers’ youth mentoring programs.
