COVID-19 Updates

May 4 Update

Hello Strand Friends,

We are anxiously awaiting the day, coming soon now, that we can open our doors and welcome you back! Though some theaters have set dates for reopening, we will wait until we hear that local health reports (in terms of  COVID infection rates and vaccinations) point to conditions that are safe for allowing us to gather together in the theater. We're cautiouly optimistic that we'll be reopening in June. Stay tuned!

Meanwhile, we’re completing the final steps in upgrades to our ventilation system with the installation of hospital-grade air filtration and ultraviolet-ray air sanitizers capable of eliminating airborne COVID virus, and have improved the intake of fresh outside air.  On the floor level, Plexiglas shielding is in place at the concession station, and we have instituted a sanitization regimen for frequently-handled surfaces. We'll have strict operational protocols enforced when the building is open to the public.

Other recent upgrades are taking place in the projection booth, where we're replacing the “brain” of our digital projector (which after seven years of service is ready for an update). This will ensure even greater reliability for our booth equipment as we move forward!

See you soon!

November 6 Update

Hello Strand Friends,

We miss you, and look forward to seeing you at the theater when we can reopen! At this point, that time is uncertain, but we are doing all we can to be ready: We’re in the process of making substantial upgrades to our ventilation system with the installation of hospital-grade air filtration and ultraviolet-ray air sanitizers capable of eliminating airborne COVID virus, and also improving the intake of fresh outside air while the theatre building is occupied. On the floor level, we’ve set up a Plexiglas shield at the concession station, and have instituted a sanitization regimen using a powerful hospital-grade COVID-killing disinfectant on frequently-handled surfaces. When the Strand does reopen to the public, it will be as a cleaner and safer Strand for both patrons and staff.
In the meantime, check out all of our offerings that can be enjoyed from home!
Stay safe, stay well, and keep in touch!

August 21 Update

Hello Strand Friends,

Some movie theaters across the country are experimenting with re-opening. However, through our recent "Re-opening" survey, most of you responded that you were not yet comfortable returning in-person to the theater, and would wait until there was a better understanding of the risks associated with spending time together indoors in small groups. Given this information, and the ever-changing landscape shaped by the virus, through September we will continue to focus on bringing you programs at our pop-up drive-in and through our virtual film offerings. And, while we eagerly anticipate a time in the near future when we can come together again in the theater, we will continue the work of preparing the space to be as safe as possible -- including upgrades to our ventilation system, the addition of plexiglass shields to our concessions stand, installation of hand sanitizer stations, and more.

The Strand Theatre team remains committed to the health and well-being of our staff and our patrons!

Stay well,

June 25 Update

Dear Strand Friends,

We are pleased to see the new Maine state directive that allows movie theaters to open, beginning on July 1! At the Strand we'll be focusing on our Drive-In and virtual programming through July, but are working on plans for reopening the theater. We'll keep you informed of our plans -- stay tuned!

Dear Strand Friends,

In response to the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and with the utmost concern for the safety of our wonderful guests and staff, we made the difficult decision to temporarily close the doors of the Strand Theatre starting on Tuesday March 17th.

We do not have a reopening date set, as we continue to monitor the situation and proceed with caution. We will share the most up-to-date information on our website, as well as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages, and our email newsletter. In the meanwhile, please enjoy some of our new programs, that you can experience safely from home! And please stay tuned for some exiting summer outdoor shows that are in the works.

We know that many of you may be concerned about the well-being of our staff during this uncertain time. As of June, most of our staff continues to work from home, and we have been able to continue paying them  through the PPP.

We understand that this is a difficult time for everyone. If you would like to, here are ways to support the Strand Theatre during our closure:

Strand Theatre Gift Cards are available for purchase on our website, and can be used for Tickets, Concessions and Merchandise at the Strand. (Sorry, they cannot be used for our Virtual Cinema programming.)

* Purchase a Strand Membership and become part of the family!

* Donate to our Annual Fund. Gifts of any amount are warmly appreciated!

* Bring the arthouse to your house by enjoying our Virtual Film programming -- 50% of ticket purchases benefit the Strand!

If you have additional questions, please email us at [email protected]

Thank you for your understanding. We have always appreciated the support of our dedicated audience, and it is our privilege to continue to share diverse films and acclaimed high definition series (Met Opera, National Theatre) through virtual platforms, as well as present newly-created shows that we hope will entertain and inspire!

Please stay safe & healthy.
