The Camden International Film Festival began in 2005 after festival founder and director Ben Fowlie realized that, despite New England's rich history of documentary filmmaking, there was no event dedicated solely to highlighting the work of nonfiction artists, especially the explosion of emerging voices committed to the craft of nonfiction storytelling.

Since then CIFF has screened hundreds of award-winning films and hosted filmmakers from all over the world. Their commitment to seek out work that pushes the boundaries of the form has helped them achieve their status as one of the most anticipated documentary events in the US. In addition to the screenings, CIFF offers Q&A sessions with filmmakers, musical performances, and interactive components that enrich participants experiences.
