A performance art play, presented by the Island Institute and Sea Coast Mission

At the turn of the last century, there were 300 inhabited, unbridged islands in Maine; now there are only 15. "On the Edge" is a one-person performance play telling the story of lobster-fishing communities on Maine's year-round islands and islanders’ determination to maintain their communities despite complex logistics, economic uncertainty, and shrinking populations. "On the Edge," written by Matinicus author and columnist Eva Murray, starring former Maine state senator Dennis Damon and paintings by Northeast Harbor’s Philip Steel, showcases the warmth, as well as the struggle, of island life.  This presentation is co-sponsored by the ISLAND INSTITUTE and SEA COAST MISSION.

The ISLAND INSTITUTE works to sustain Maine’s island and remote coastal communities, and exchanges ideas and experiences to further the sustainability of communities here and elsewhere.  We envision that Maine’s year-round island communities will thrive and lead as examples of sustainability.

The MAINE SEA COAST MISSION provides spiritual, health, and youth development programs in coastal and island communities from mid-coast to Downeast Maine. Rooted in a history of non-denominational service, the MISSION offers hope, encouragement and help to strengthen individuals, families and communities.
