The Farnsworth Forum Presents: Christo

The internationally renowned artist

On Wednesday, September 10, the Farnsworth Forum will once again host one of America’s leading public intellectuals who will give his views on the state of the art world. This year, the Forum is thrilled to present internationally renowned artist Christo.

For our 2014 Farnsworth Forum presentation, Christo will speak on his historic projects ranging over half a century and highlight two extraordinary works in progress: The Mastaba, a project begun in 1977, and Over the River.

Known throughout the world for their breathtaking monumental installations in great cities and beautiful natural settings, Christo and the late Jeanne-Claude moved permanently to New York in 1964. Working constantly throughout this country and abroad on challenging projects of various sizes, in 1972 they created the huge Valley Curtain, Colorado, and more and more people began looking forward to what was going to come next.

Before long a series of beautiful and highly popular works appeared around the globe:  Running Fence, Sonoma and Marin Counties, California  (1976); Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida (1983); The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Paris  (1985);The Umbrellas, Japan-U.S.A. (1991); Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin (1995); and The Gates, Central Park, New York City (2005).

Christo will discuss in detail the current status of The Mastaba, a project begun in 1977, and Over the River. The artist will then answer questions from the audience.
