JEST presented by Designated Movement Company

Part of the Strand's NEW CENTURY SERIES

This event takes place at Union Hall (24 Central Street) in Rockport.

JEST is an all-female dance theater performance created by Designated Movement Company about contemporary femininity, depression, moon cycles, an overwhelming sense of impending doom, ritual and witchiness, the color blue, walking bass lines, uncomfortability, snow, and isolation. It's deeply personal – part Artistic Director Katie Rose McLaughlin's coming out story, and part exploration of the four weeks she spent in a government quarantine in South Korea where she created an alter ego named Princess Quarantine.

Running time: 50 min. plus a talk-back

"It's whimsical, but with a tart, knowing edge. The strong rhythms create sharply delineated
boundaries around McLaughlin's clever choreography." - Erin Bomboy, Fit Engine

Designated Movement Company (DMC) creates performance as an  inquiry into human systems – physical, mental and social. Their work examines the hierarchical structures society places on bodies, the contortions we as citizens choose or don’t choose to participate in. Using radical inclusivity to create a more just, inviting, and equitable rehearsal room, DMC interrogates the emotional memories stored in the body, folding them inside out to become something you can almost taste on the tip of your tongue.

Katie Rose McLaughlin is the Artistic Director of Designated Movement Company and is an NYC-based choreographer and director for theater, opera, film, music videos and viral TikToks. She has the great pleasure of being the Associate Choreographer for the Tony Award-winning musical HADESTOWN on Broadway, NYTW, Edmonton, South Korea, and the First National Tour. Her work has been presented by Ars Nova, Under the Radar, HERE Arts Center, Joe’s Pub, St. Anne’s Warehouse, Target Margin, BRIC, and Ensemble Studio Theatre among others.

Originally from Minneapolis, MN, Katie Rose trained in ballet under the direction of Bonnie Mathis, she attended the Joffrey/New School BFA program on full scholarship prior to kicking off her love affair with theater by training at a renowned clown school in Switzerland. She has performed with the Tony Award-winning Theatre de la Jeune Lune and as Esmeralda in several iterations of Redmoon Theater’s HUNCHBACK including runs in Washington D.C. and at the New Victory Theater in NY where it received a New York Times Critics’ Pick.
