PEYTON PLACE: 60th Anniversary Screening

Premiere of a major new 35mm restoration by 20th Century Fox! Co-presented with the Maine International Film Festival

Shot on location in Midcoast Maine in 1957 and now brought back to vibrant life in this spectacular 35mm restoration on the eve of its 60th anniversary, Peyton Place was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography; plus five Best Acting or Supporting Acting nominations.  In this adaptation of Grace Metalious’ controversial and hugely popular novel, steamy goings-on abound beneath the placid and proper surface of a picturesque New England village.  New high school principal Michael Rossi (Lee Philips) arrives in Peyton Place on the eve of World War II and soon takes up with beautiful but repressed dress shop owner Constance MacKenzie (Lana Turner) who’s harboring a few secrets from daughter Allison (Diane Varsi).  Behind a curtain of contentment and decorum, Michael discovers seething, dark undercurrents that include rape, suicide, and murder.
