WE RUN THE SHIP: A "Make Your Own Adventure" Musical for Kids

Presented by Barn Arts Collective

We Run the Ship is a one-of-a-kind theatre event from the Barn Arts Collective, featuring original music, upcycled puppets, and big decisions. A big flood is coming and it’s up to the audience to choose a ship and chart a course through this high-seas adventure musical for the whole family!

The Barn Arts Collective co-producers, Andrew Simon and Brittany Parker, began working on We Run the Ship in the fall of 2013. Inspired by R.A. Montgomery’s popular “choose-your- own-adventure” books and motivated by current events, the team wanted to create a piece that encouraged people of all ages to feel empowered by the decisions they make.

“We looked around our country to find an indecisive Congress and a changing climate -- a real challenge for our future leaders,” Parker said. “We wanted to make an interactive show that made the audience feel comfortable, while creating a fun way for young people to engage with decision making.”

The musical includes original music, puppets crafeted from recycled materials, and three different “ships” for the audience to choose as part of their journey. We Run the Ship premiered in NYC at the Bowery Poetry Club in the spring of 2014, and has since been performed at Mayo Street Arts in Portland, the Brooklyn NY Public Library, and in several venues on Mount Desert Island, including a full run in the summer of 2015 at the Criterion Theater in Bar Harbor.

“We are thrilled to bring We Run the Ship to the Strand,” Simon said. “We’ve got a great cast of local artists that are excited to bring the show to Rockland.”
