Original title: Marcel et Monsieur Pagnol
A sophisticated hand-drawn homage to the life and work of Marcel Pagnol, one of France’s most celebrated playwrights and filmmakers, known for his “Marseille Trilogy” and later for Provencal favorites Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring. Academy Award-nominated director Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville) brings the sun-drenched landscapes of Pagnol’s childhood to life with a painterly animation style, while also incorporating archival footage and clips from Pagnol’s films.
The film begins with Pagnol at age 60, feeling obsolete and disconnected from a modernizing world. Asked to write a series of memoirs, Pagnol is stumped and worried about his failing memory until he is reacquainted with 10-year old Marcel who guides him through his own life story and helps him see it as more than a linear journey.

“A visual feast… Chomet’s handmade-style animations, filled with larger-than-life characters with an affectionate touch of caricature, locate him as a kind of earthbound French cousin to Hayao Miyazaki.”

“The animation here is quite stunning and completely unlike anything else being made today… especially gorgeous in the intricate details of its locations that give these moments a lived-in quality.”
