BEAUTIFUL BLACKBIRD CHILDREN’S BOOK FESTIVAL
The Beautiful Blackbird Children’s Book Festival celebrates children’s literature of the African diaspora across the state of Maine! Now in its 7th season, you can check out the following events in the Rockland/Camden area.

Saturday, September 1210-11:30am @ hello hello booksRead Aloud and Book GiveawayJoin the staff at hello hello books for a kickoff to our local festival events with a read-aloud of Ashley Bryan’s Beautiful Blackbird as well as Shauntay Grant’s The Deepest Blue. Books will be available at the store for giveaways at this event as well as throughout the month of the festival!

Join actor-educator-theater maker Mélissa Smith in an interactive reading of Saturday by author-artist Oge Mora. The reading will be prefaced by a song and movement break and followed by an original performance inspired by the themes, relationships, and vibrant illustrations from the book. This school-time performance is open to all schools, homeschools, and families with kids not yet in school. Each group will receive a copy of the book to bring back to their school/classroom/home. Recommended for ages 3-8, or grades Pre-K to 2nd. Registration is required using this form.
Saturday, October 171-2pm @ Villager Cafe with Center for Mane Contemporary ArtBook Giveaway and Art MarkingIn this ArtLab for All Ages, create a colorful cut paper collage inspired by the ocean. In the book Sail Away, poet Langston Hughes and artist Ashley Bryan celebrate the sea. Take home a free copy of the book as part of the Beautiful Blackbird Children’s Book Festival.
Sunday, October 1811am-3pm @ Sunday Stroll with the Farnsworth Art MuseumBook Giveaway and Art MakingMeet us outside of the Farnsworth Art Museum during Rockland’s Sunday Stroll for a book giveaway and art craft, inspired by the imagery and themes of The Night Has Ears by Ashley Bryan.
