Inspired by director Maryam Touzani’s own grandmother, Calle Málaga is a vibrant “coming-of-old-age” drama that explores displacement, resilience, and one woman’s refusal to fade away. The story centers on María Ángeles (played by legendary Spanish actress and Pedro Almodovar favorite Carmen Maura), a 79-year-old widow living in Tangier, Morocco. She has lived on the bustling Calle Málaga for 40 years, maintaining a comforting and beautiful routine of watering her geraniums, visiting her childhood friend (a cloistered nun), and navigating the local markets.
This perfect life is threatened when her daughter arrives and, faced with financial ruin, decides to sell the family apartment, which is legally in her name. Faced with a new life in an assisted living facility, María hatches a plan to reclaim her life piece by piece and ends up finding community and love in the process.
