Stella (Lesley Manville) and Gerry (Ciarán Hinds) are a retired Irish couple living a quiet, predictable life in Glasgow. On the surface, they are the picture of stable companionship, navigating the world with the shorthand that only decades of intimacy can provide. However, beneath the surface, they have become “alone together,” as they each maintain their own secrets.
On a whim, Stella books a four-day winter trip to Amsterdam. While Gerry sees it as a romantic getaway to liven up their stagnant routine, Stella hopes for a reckoning with things from the past that she can’t let go. The picturesque city provides an apt backdrop as they find themselves in uncharted emotional territory and contemplate how well they really know one another.
